Here is a list of some of the most important components of the Mindstorms NXT:

The NXT Intelligent Brick

The 'brain' of the Mindstorms NXT robot. It is an intellegent, computer controlled, LEGO brick that Mindstorms robot come alive and perform different operations. There are 3 motor ports, A,B & C. You can connect to it via a USB port, or via the wireless Bluetooth to download your programming or to upload data to your computer. There are also 4 sensor input ports, connecting your LEGO NXT brick to upto 4 of the sensors. It also has a loud speaker so your robot can make the sounds you programme into it (eg: get the LEGO NXT brick to say "ouch" when the touch sensor bumps into things!). The Mindstorms NXT Touch Sensor

The Touch Sensor gives your robot a sense of touch. It detects when it is being pressed and when it is being released again. You can use a Touch Sensor to make your Mindstorm NXT robot act on a command. By pressing the Touch Sensor you can make your robot walk, talk, close a door, or turn on your TV.

The Lego NXT Sound Sensor

The sound Sensor allows your robot to hear. The Sound Sensor can detect both decibels [dB] and adjusted decibel [dBA] (a decibel is a measurement of sound pressure) and can measure sound pressure levels up to 90 dB - about the level of a lawnmower. dBA detects the same range of sounds of Humans, whereas dB also detects sound beyond our normal hearing range. You can program your Lego Mindstorms NXT robot to start, stop, or make a noise on command when hearing sounds!

The Lego NXT Light Sensor

Light Sensor detects how light a colour is One of the two sensors that gives your robot vision, enabling it to distinguish between light and dark. It can measure the light intensity in a room and also measure the light intensity of coloured surfaces. Use the Light Sensor to make your robot a burglar alarm - when an intruder turns on the light in your room the robot can react to defend your property!

The NXT Ultrasonic Sensor

Enables your robot to see and detect objects. You can also use it to make your robot avoid obstacles, sense and measure distance, and detect movement. The Ultrasonic Sensor uses the same scientific principle as bats: it measures distance by calculating the time it takes for a sound wave to hit an object and return - just like an echo.

The Mindstorm NXT Servo Motors

These 3 motors give your robot the ability to move. If you use the 'Move' block in the Mindstorms NXT software to program your motors, the two motors will automatically synchronize, so that your robot will move in a straight line
